When I first started doing makeup I really wasn’t too sure what I needed or even how to apply it. I would sit in front of my mirror every night, my makeup products in front of me and I would ‘create’ makeup looks, usually some sort of crazy eye makeup.
I remember the first ever makeup product I ever purchased was a super wet, glittery mascara that transferred onto my upper lid, but I was so excited because it had silver glitter particles in it, although come to think of it I don’t recall the glitter ever transferring to the lashes.
So, if like I was, your interested in experimenting with makeup but are not sure where to start here are my picks for a beginners makeup kit.
The Beautiful Base Products
Foundation – L’Oreal True Match Foundation
Available in 40 shades, this foundation caters to all undertones: Cool, Warm and Neutral; so it’s never been easier to match your foundation to your skin tone. Infused with Hyaluronic Acid, the L’Oreal True Match Foundation offers skincare benefits, thanks to its Hyaluronic formula & Vitamin E ingredients. It claims to be non-comedogenic (meaning: formulated to not likely block pores) and suitable for sensitive skin. It is a lovely lightweight formula, once applied its easy to forget you are wearing any foundation at all, I would say its a medium to light coverage but its definitely buildable.
I have been using this foundation for a few years now and I honestly think it is one of the best drugstore foundations I have ever purchased.
The perfect match to the L’Oreal True Match Foundation, this concealer comes in 12 shades (so not quite the extensive shade range of the foundation) and enriched with Caffeine to brighten the under-eye area. The L’Oreal True Match Concealer is a lightweight, medium to high coverage that is buildable and blendable, with a doe-foot applicator for easy application.
I have been using this concealer alongside my foundation for brightening my under eyes (I suffer from dark circles) and I find it to be one of the best under eye concealer formulations I have ever used. I don’t find it to be drying, which I sometimes find with some concealers, and it blends out like a dream.
Forever a cult favourite, the Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder, is a must-have for any beauty enthusiast. Available in 6 shades, but the most sought after is the Transparent, perfect for all skin tones the transparent shade will set your base and stop it from moving for up to 5 hours (if you suffer from an oily t-zone, like myself, you may need to carry this around with you throughout the day to keep those pesky oils at bay, or blot away with toilet paper which will absorb the oils).
Face & Eye – Revolution X Rachel Leary Goddess On The Go Palette
A compact, portable palette for easy everyday makeup looks. The palette contains a Blusher, Bronzer and 2 Highlighters, alongside 9 warm toned matte and shimmer shadows, perfect for all your face sculpting and eye shadow dreams.
No Beginner’s Makeup Kit it complete without a KOHL Eye Liner. Kohl eye liners are perfect for adding a bit of soft drama to the eyes. Kohl liners are a fantastic versatile product; you can use them in the waterline or smudge them out for an easy smokey eye. The GOSH Liner also contains Vitamin E and is perfume and preservative free.
Felt Tip Eye Liner – Rimmel Scandaleyes Micro Eye Liner
For extra definition, you need a felt-tip eye liner, these are great for creating dramatic winged looks. I personally love a thin liner as these are more versatile, you can keep things simple or amp or the drama depending on your mood.
Lip Gloss is one of the easiest lip products to apply, they can be worn alone or on top of another lip product. Some formula’s are more sheer than others, and over time most formula’s have been developed to be less sticky, although this cannot be entirely avoided due to the nature of the product.
The Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipsticks are a great first time lipstick to purchase, the quality is always good, the lipsticks are always super creamy and there is a wide range of shades and formulas to choose from. In fact, Rimmel was the first drugstore brand that I religiously purchased from and still love to this day.
Another Rimmel favourite their Exaggerate Lip Liner. I love the fact that these are mechanical and you just twist the product up rather than your standard pencil which needs regular sharpening. The products are super creamy, and the fine tip makes it a doddle to apply.
In the last few years, everyday makeup has really stepped up its game. The world of Beauty Blogging opened the doors to the products, techniques and tools that the professional makeup artists have been using for years, and this opening of the doors meant non-professionals were learning how to get that professional makeup look.
Real Techniques Everyday Essentials Set
There’s a couple of options for base application, you could simply use your fingers, but ensure you have cleaned your hands first to avoid cross-contamination, or you can use either a blending sponge or buffing brush, both of which are included in the Real Techniques Everyday Essentials Set, making this set perfect for experimenting with and finding your preferred application method.
The Complexion Sponge is a great base applicator, the flat edge makes blending your foundation super easy, and the pointed edge is great for blending out the under eye concealer, as it fits neatly into the inner corner of the eye.
The Expert Face Brush is a fantastic brush, this makes blending liquids and creams effortless. The dense bristles, make easy work of buffing out foundation, and is my go-to base application brush.
The 402 Setting Brush is a soft fluffy brush, perfect for applying setting powder to your under eyes or applying highlighter to your cheekbones.
The 400 Blush Brush is another fluffy brush but this one is significantly bigger than the 402 Setting Brush. The larger surface makes this a great brush for applying setting powder or bronzer all-over the face as well as it’s name sake, blush application.
The 300 Deluxe Crease Brush is a great easy eye-shadow brush, this makes blending out eye shadows a breeze. This brush has short, dense bristles that work well with cream and powder shadows.
Honestly, this little set is a perfect beginners tool set, it has everything in there to create all sorts of makeup looks.
I hope this beginners makeup kit has helped you in deciding which products to purchase to start you on your makeup journey, and hopefully avoid any product failures like I experienced in my younger years. Makeup has come a whole long way since my first product purchase and there is a lot more information readily available right here on the internet in the form of blog posts and videos. These are just a couple of products that I would personally choose if I were starting out again in the year 2020.
Leave a comment below if you have tried any of the products I have mentioned or want to share your beginners makeup story, I would love to hear all about it.
